This pumoana is crafted from a King Helmet Shell, selected for its natural form and the strong, resonant voice these shells are renowned for. A blowing hole has been carefully created to allow the shell to sound cleanly and responsively, while the remainder of the shell has been left untouched, preserving its original character and natural beauty.
Its voice carries a rich, full tone that can travel well across open spaces, making it suitable for ceremonial use, gathering people together, or personal practice. The shell itself guides much of the sound and presence of the instrument, reflecting the unique qualities inherent in the material.
As with all taonga, no two are exactly alike. The shape, colour, markings, and voice of this pūmoana are expressions of the shell's own journey, making it a unique, one-off piece.
