Pumoana (Helmet Shell Trumpet)

The pumoana is a shell trumpet whose voice carries the presence of Tangaroa. Compact in form yet resonant in sound, it offers a direct connection between breath, shell, and the surrounding environment.

Each pumoana is individually selected and prepared, with the natural form of the shell determining the character of the finished taonga. Rather than using a separate mouthpiece, a playing aperture is carved directly into the shell and shaped to suit the individual purchaser, creating a comfortable and responsive instrument tailored to its owner.

The result is a unique taonga with its own voice, appearance, and personality. Compact and easy to carry, the pumoana is well suited to learning, practice, performance, and ceremonial use.
