Pupakapaka (Long Stemmed Shell Trumpet)

This pūpakapaka is a long-stem pūtātara crafted from a large Triton shell, shaped to carry a strong, commanding voice suited to ceremonial use and open spaces. The extended form enhances both projection and presence, giving the instrument a deep, resonant call.

The kōngutu (mouthpiece) is shaped from tōtara and bound with natural fibre, then finished with paruparu. Each element has been carefully worked to respect the integrity of the shell while ensuring the instrument responds cleanly and plays with clarity.

This is a one-off taonga. The form and voice follow the natural character of the shell, making each piece unique in both sound and appearance.
