Putatara (Frog Shell Trumpet)

This pūtātara is crafted from a frog shell, shaped to produce a clear and responsive voice suited to both ceremonial use and personal practice. Its more compact form offers a focused sound while still carrying well in open spaces.

The kōngutu (mouthpiece) is shaped from tōtara, bound with natural fibre, and finished with paruparu. Care has been taken to respect the natural form of the shell while ensuring the instrument plays cleanly and reliably.

As with all taonga, the character of the sound and form is guided by the material itself, making this a unique, one-off piece.
